Bulgaria is uniquely situated at the crossroads between different geographic, climatic and geological regions and this contributes to the biological wealth of the country and its unique environment. In terms of plant diversity, Bulgaria ranks fifth in Europe, with 3,567 species. Bulgaria also has more animal species within its territory than any other country in Europe. Bulgarian history enthusiasts are bound to be excited by the remnants of numerous occupying empires such as Roman amphitheatres, Thracian tombs and Turkish fortresses. Last year a team of archaeologists unearthed an ancient Thracian funeral mask of solid gold that they say is as important a find as the treasures of Agamemnon and Tutankhamen. |

The cold, damp winters of Bulgaria lead into dry, hot summers, and have helped create the natural forests that cover over 35% of the country. The Bulgaria National Park was created in 2002 to preserve the centuries old beech-tree forest eco-systems of the Balkan mountains. There are also natural phenomena of Vikana rock, Muhatite (Mossy) rocks and Stolista. There is also a great variety of animals; Imperial and small Eagles, rock partridge, small hawk, bears, wolves, wild boar, stags, deer, just to mention a few.
The Central Balkan National Park in Bulgaria is among one of the most valuable protected areas in Europe. It contains some of Europe’s last wilderness regions. The natural forest eco-system is unequalled in Europe. The park was established in 1991, to preserve the unique nature of Central Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountains) and the related traditions and living. Of the rich and diverse wildlife there are 10 plants which can be found nowhere else in the world. |

In the countryside of Bulgaria rural life goes on at an unhurried pace reminiscent of the 1950s.
Organic food, local wine Bulgaria is a land full of vegetable plots and orchards. But fresh fruit and vegetables are only half the secret of Bulgarian food. A great variety of spices are also used in cooking. With plenty of salads and vegetarian dishes the Bulgarians themselves are also great lovers of different meats grilled or baked in the oven. Combined with the Bulgarian wines it makes for memorable evenings of enjoyment. The production of wine in Bulgaria is an ancient tradition dating back to the 6th century BC. It may surprise some wine-lovers to learn that Bulgaria is currently the world’s fifth-largest exporter of wine.
Typically Bulgarian Bulgarians love festivals, whether it's traditional fire-dancing, family weddings or religious occasions at local churches and regional monasteries. Many special events involve making bread, wearing traditional costumes and drinking copious amounts of palatable, local wine. |
